Brands, you need a shot list for you next photoshoot, okay?
Any visual content created for your company will be taken as a direct reflection of your values, your intentions, and your energy. When working with an agency or freelance creative, they are an external party that isn't necessarily working with you every single day, so hopefully, they are taking the time to learn the ins and outs of your key messaging and visual identity, but a shot list for your photoshoots will still be absolutely crucial.
Just in case you don't know, a shot list is literally what it sounds like: an itemized list of images, shots, that you want captured during a photoshoot. The directive can be as simple as "hand holding cup" or something more like "cup on white backdrop with light source on the left, creating a shadow."
You might have a seasonal shot list, a campaign oriented shot list, or a shot list for evergreen imagery. You can create this shot list internally if you know what you need, or you can collaborate with a creative director/your photographer (hi, I'm both and Marika Creative specializes in this :)) to help you organize your thoughts and craft the right shot list that is going to be the most effective for conversion and growth.
If you're still confused about why you need a shot list, here are three reasons to convince you:
1. A shot list limits opportunities for miscommunication between you and your photographer. By taking the time to organize your thoughts and curate what you need, you're more likely to get what you want on the other side of a shoot.
2. A shot list saves time. Time on set is valuable, and every minute should be going towards achieving the end goal. A shot list keeps everyone organized, on task, and goal oriented.
3. A shot list gives you peace of mind in knowing that you've clarified your vision and that your visual presence is on track for greatness.
